About Us

Wallsend Boys Club (“WBC”) was founded in 1904 by the employees and directors of Swan Hunters Shipyard in order to provide recreational activities for the apprentices and young people in the area. WBC runs a variety of activities that are open to all young people in the local area, and has a strong history and track record of supporting disadvantaged young people. WBC has an international reputation for its football development programme, currently running 45 representative teams, for male and female players from four years of age to an over 40’s team. It has a tremendous track record of producing professional players (92 former members) including Alan Shearer, Steve Bruce and Michael Carrick.

The objects of The Club are to help and educate members, through leisure activities, to develop their physical and mental capacity in order to help them become useful and responsible members of society.

The Club is a Registered Charity(charity no. 1114421) and company limited by guarantee (5540723)  with a mission and wider aspirations for the future, run by staff and volunteers who organise and deliver the activities of the club. 

This track record helps attract young people to its programmes, whether sports focused or using other methods to engage for social impact. It effectively uses the profile of some of its former members to help both with the engagement programmes and for fundraising, and is a vital hub in the local community for young people and their families.

There are numerous volunteering opportunities within the club and we are always happy to welcome new volunteers to our organisation. There are many parents and ex-members who could help enormously with the running of the Club and we would love to hear from you if you would like to contribute your talents in some way.
